University of Illinois and Singapore agreed to partnership

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

According to Chicago Tribute, The University of Illinois trustees agreed to build the Advanced Digital Sciences Center in partnership with Singapore’s government. The deal is that Singapore government will provide a grant of $50 million.

Smells similar in a sense to the deal with Australia’s University of New South Wales. Hope they don’t make the same blunder again. It better not be, once bitten, twice bitten, every shy again.

World Bank says that Singapore needs to ease controls to remain competitive

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

According to International Herald Tribune, World Bank Managing Director Juan Jose Daboub says that tightly-controlled Singapore needs to loosen up restrictions to allow innovation so that it can remain competitive in the long-term.

He made his point by the illustration, “in United States, you can do a U-turn anywhere except where a sign forbids it, while in Singapore, drivers can only do a U-turn where a sign permits it”. Quoting him, “In this anecdote, there is a grain of truth. Innovation and creativity are, by definition, not orderly and not regulated”.

As a local, I do wonder how much control would the ruling party ease? Do their even see a need to ease control in order to be competitive? Just for example, regardless of the amount of debate on pink dollar, regulations will remain and pink dollar remains elusive.

An Israeli tourist, getting irritated with the wolf whistling by the road workers in a small New Zealand town, stripped off, used an ATM cash machine, before getting dressed and walk away.

Hmm… strange way of response. But, I guess, it works.

Mexican donkey jailed for assault

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

In Mexican, a donkey was jailed for biting and kicking two men. Oh, isn’t it interesting that animal can be jailed now. :)

Actually, the reason behind the jailing of the donkey, is to get it’s owner to paid a fine of US$36, a hospital bill of US$115 for the two men, and in addition US$480 for each missed work day by each man. And, the owner has actually paid up for the fine and the hospital bill in order to get his donkey released. Very innovative way of handling the case. :)

Myanmar cyclone survivors kicked out of shelters to make space for polling stations

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

According to ST, Myanmar cyclone survivors are being kicked out of wooden schoolhouse that they use as shelter. This is in order for the government to use the shelters are polling stations.

When a government is willing to kick out its disaster survivors just for political voting stations, it shows very clearly where their priority lies. It is definitely not on its citizens.

USA showing signs of unofficial recession?

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

According to a recent survey, more than half of Americians will not be taking a summer holiday this year. They cite saving money as the reason, and will opt instead to stay home. Quoting Mr Tom Musbach, senior managing editor of Yahoo Hotjobs, which conducted the poll, “The economic downturn is leading to layoffs and stretched resources, which in turn leads to increased workloads and pressure to improve performance.”

That sounds like something which many often heard locally. More overtime, which may not be paid for, and higher workload, has always seem to be the norm in Singapore. However, for USA to be going towards such a trend, it does not bode well to the world economy.

Two boys 7 and 9 slowly and coldly tortured a 2-year old girl to death

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

It is really shocking to read that in Argentines, such a case of cold cruel death was inflicted on an innocent 2-year old. It really brings to the point on how a family of violence can prime young children to lack empathy, and perhaps knowing that they are minor, could well get away from prosecution.

In this case, the two brothers, according to Argentine law, will be held in youth homes until they reach 18, and then released without further punishment.

Society at large, is getting more apathy, and moral issues are getting less addressed
